Description Pictures
Carleton was founded in 1756 by Acadians who had been chased away from Beaubassins during the 1755 deportation. At that time it was called Tracadieche. Later, in 1787, the Loyalists changed the name to Carleton in honor of Lieutenant-Governor Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester.

Also named Carleton-sur-Mer, this seaside resort has all it takes to please the traveler. At Tracadigash, at the end of banc Larocque is a lighthouse open to visitors. In the small building adjacent to the lighthouse you can listen to conferences about Carleton's heritage and attend presentations of le Pirate de l'Ile given by a storyteller-singer. You can also go hunting for agates on the beach.

Take route du Quai to get to banc des Maisons. There you will find an observation tower overlooking a colony of sterns.

There are 35 kilometers of hiking trails situated behind the towns of Carleton and Maria with belvederes from place to place. You can also find biking trails and in-line skating rings.

Amongst other attractions you have the municipal beach, a playground for children and the Penouil Interpretation Centre where you can find local handicrafts.

Other activities include : sea excursions, golfing, horseback riding, a marina, a theatre, Mt. Saint-Joseph, shows with well-known performers, art galleries and finally the Maximum Blues Festival at the beginning of August.

In winter, take advantage of the many cross-country skiing trails and the Festineiges (ice sculptures, snowmobile races are a few of the numerous activities surrounding this festival).
