This village was established in 1908 under the name Nouvelle-et-Shoolbred-Partie-Sud-Ouest representing the two townships that the village was part of. In 1912, Escuminac was adopted. It means "observation post" in Micmac language. This agricultural community was settled by American Loyalists.
The most western part of Bay of Chaleur begins at Escuminac. The bay is calm and quite narrow here. In fact we can see a portion of the New Brunswick coast. Moreover, the mountains are closer to the water here, which makes for impressive panoramas. The municipality of Escuminac includes the village of Pointe-a-la-Garde which is a little further west.
