The village was founded in 1924 and was named in honor of Bishop Elzear Matte, the first to urge people to settle here. Another important figure of this community is Donat Paradis, parish priest from 1939 to 1948. He founded the Credit Union, the Consumers Union and the Cooperative Forest Association.

When you get to Saint-Elzear, you can feel the pride of these villagers who survived in spite of difficult economic situations. If you take Rang 12 to the west you will come upon the falls of Duval River. The water is so clear it is hardly noticeable (see picture). Saint-Elzear also has a cave and a private hydroelectric dam.
