Murdochville was founded in 1953, making it one of the youngest municipalities in Gaspésie. Although the Miller brothers had discovered an important copper deposit as early as 1921, Noranda Mines became interested only in the 1950's and in 1955 the first copper casting came out. James Y. Murdoch, founder of the city and owner of the mine, gave his name to Murdochville.
40 km inland, Murdochville is surrounded by mountains and forests. You will get an eyeful of beautiful panoramas on your way to this mining town. During summer, you can visit the interpretation centre. There is also an outdoor recreation centre (cabins, camping, fishing) and a tennis court available. In the winter season, alpine and cross-country skiing, curling, skating and snowmobiling will make your stay a memorable one.
