Under the French regime, it was called "Pointe-au-Genievre". It was established in 1855 and has always been an important commercial fishing centre in the province. Two Jersian companies (Hamond & Legros and Robin) successively exploited the industry and to this day Newport has maintained its fishing vocation. All along the locality of Newport, from L'Anse au Carnaval on the north side to the Newport Ilots zone, remarkable beaches make it possible to go swimming and to practise other activities. There are two fishing harbors, at Newport Point to the north (the most important with a shipyard nearby) and at Newport Ilôts to the south. You can also visit the interpretation centre.
