Established in 1856, Riviere-au-Renard has been the scene of important historical events. For instance, a large part of the population is of Irish descendance due to the sinking of the Carrick in 1847. In 1909, 20 fishermen were made prisoner after their revolt in which they demanded better prices for their fish. Fishing cooperatives may have originated as a result of these events.
Welcome to this great fishing capital. With its two harbors, numerous trawlers, shipyard and fish processing plant, Riviere-au-Renard is a very important fishing centre in the Gaspe Peninsula.
