Description Pictures
Matapedia was founded in 1905 and comes from the Micmac matapegiag meaning "forking river, joining rivers". As a matter of fact, the Ristigouche and Matapedia rivers meet here and form a perfect location for new Loyalist, Irish, Acadian and French Canadian settlers coming to the region.

Matapedia is at the center of a region called Les Plateaux formed with 5 other villages. Filled with mountains, rivers, gorges and wildlife, this region is still to this day a salmon fishing paradise for American aristocrats.

If outdoor activities interest you, Matapedia is for you. There are many biking and hiking trails (including Appalachian International Trail) as well as different salmon fishing packages and canoe rides on the Ristigouche River, offered by outfitters.

Plan a stop at the Saint-Laurent-de-Matapedia church, a real part of our heritage.

The winter season brings its share of alpine and cross-country skiing and offers many snowmobile trails.
